This has been a wild week. The kids started school on Tuesday, NWWC started rehearsing on Monday, 4H got rolling again, and I spent three different days over at Curlyheart shop working on my live edge table. (I also had a back to school night on Thursday, and worked on Friday, and today Moss and I learned how to play Magic the Gathering after church.)
Big week. But woodworking really eclipsed everything else in both time and attention.
I just discovered that there are several different types of furniture joints. I knew of this existence in the way one knows about different varieties of zucchini—they exist but I couldn’t give you specifics—but this week I found a diagram in a shaker furniture book and I am a little obsessed.
I’ve build plenty of things over the years but how much have I missed out on not using better joints? I haven’t taken them into account in my writing either! Do you know how often I write about historic barns? Never once did I mention specific joints! (To be fair I don’t think anyone is going to notice or miss the absence of that piece of info in my novels). Still.
I don’t have a ton of time at the moment to go all obsessive about a new facet of my woodworking hobby, but I’ve put it on the calendar for February.
Actual time wise, my table got the most hours of any project this week. This is because after nearly burning my friends’ garage down in a resin incident (we caught it in time) we went back to small pours. Three gallons of resin later…
Sanding and finish to hopefully happen this week.
It’s fascinating to me how much my brain likes research. I crave learning new things! Usually I sate the urge with research for my novels but during my current project I am reaching into hobbies instead. Violet and I are jumping into a new project tomorrow–well, a new phase of an ongoing project—and maybe, just maybe, It will be ready to unveil in the next week or so.
