Kids are like plants. They need the same basic ingredients for survival; everyone has opinions on best practices; and half the time they seem to be on the verge of death or catastrophe. Experienced plant and human parents will tell you “It is really an individual thing.”
I ask people never to judge me on one kid on one day.
This week I was pretty hyperfocused on all things kiddo. Not just staring off into space and thinking about plant metaphors or driving back and forth to town 23 times a day to get the wee folk to their enrichments.
Pepper got the most attention with a trip up to the border to off load things into her first apartment. Her neighbors played hide and seek—loudly— until 2 am and you can hear everything through all the walls, but her design aesthetic is cute and pink and she is living with her bestie. All will be well once she has more hangers.

Moss tagged along to help with the heavy lifting and we had a lot of travel time to discuss the ins and outs of his Halloween costume. It is going to be epic and probably the subject of quite a few Hyperfocus mini updates in the next two months. It involves yarn…

Girl Scouts started up again and we are going vintage this year. All the ceremonies, songs, and epic lore drops along with badges, patches, and even cookies. We started off with Book Making (M and V tried out my instructions instead of doing history on Wednesday, but I’ll roll it in somehow) and map reading while talking about what makes us truly happy. I plan on practicing happiness a little harder this week.
L started her first day at “real” preschool— reluctantly— until big sis offered to drop her off. She came home madly in love with the whole experience. The other kids also made it through the week and we only forgot one person one place one time.
I did get one beautiful, wonderful, perfect kid free afternoon off. My friend Ginny and I went on a girl date. Lunch, used book store, window shopping for fancy plants, and three hours at Camaraderie Cellars winery chatting about life and writing projects. That made me happy.
Monday is my birthday and my gift to myself (aside from the Lino cutting materials and new board game) is a little more space for the fun hyperfoci: the research, the crafting, the weird diagrams and spreadsheets that explain how I see the world. Maybe the history of 3×5 cards?
